When I was a small girl I thought that only elder people wore dentures. After all, my grandma had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were duplicate. I never thought that I could also be wearing dentures while I was still a young person.
I was thirty three years old when I had to have the remainder of my teeth extracted, all nine of them. My teeth have never been healthy and they were slowly removed one after the other. When the last nine teeth were extracted I had the dentures placed immediately. I did not want to be without teeth.
Somehow I felt it would be problematic to get used to having teeth in my mouth after being without them for some time. Eventually, I found this to be a fact. By having the dentures placed immediately upon extraction, I was never without teeth so the dentures felt like my natural teeth.
I have to admit that having the dentures placed immediately upon extraction was difficult but only considering that I could not clean them myself for around three weeks. I had to go to the dentist's office where he took out the denture, cleaned it and returned it, all through the time that the gums were healing.
After three weeks I was able to do this myself. In the beginning the task was a strange one. Removing the dentures and brushing them and replacing them. But it did have its one light time.
At that time my youngest boy was about four years old. He wandered into the bathroom one day just as I was cleaning my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth widely open, then turned around and ran out of the house as fast as he could. He ran down the block to my girlfriend's house yelling as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, guess what my mommy can do?" When he told her what I could do she walked him to my house and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not automatically taking out my natural teeth. We still chuckle about that, so many years after.
I still believe that the most useful way to place your denture is immediately after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures today) because you are never without teeth. You do not ever have to go through that period of getting used to having teeth, as you would have to do if you go without dentures when your gums are healing. What amazes me most is that when I do have to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw in fact hurts since it has never been closed without teeth. That tight close is actually very painful.
I have learned that dentures are not mainly for old people because they are made for youngsters too. As I said, at age thirty three I had my upper dentures. Since then I learned that there are children that often have to have dentures as a result of accidents or disease.
